It doesn't matter if you are tall or short!

We really need your help as a
telephone befriender

The aim of telephone befriending is to reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness in older people. Volunteers are required to ring an older person and check they are in good health and build a friendship.

Making a call seems really simple, but having someone to talk to and someone just to listen can make such a difference to an older person, particularly if they are living alone. It could be that you are the only person they speak to that day, or even that week. The Listening Line service has become more and more important during the Covid-19 outbreak as people become more isolated and are wherry about meeting people.

Our befrienders are introduced to an older person through a telephone call. Future calls are flexible, although usually they are the same time and day every week.

To be a befriender you would need the following qualities:

  • Aged 18 and over

  • Good listening skills

  • Have patience, empathy, and understanding

  • Flexible, reliable and punctual

  • Clear understanding of boundaries and confidentiality

  • Be able to provide non judgemental support

  • Willing to be trained.
